18th C . arched painted dial longcase in a crossbanded oak case by Groves Donisthorpe of Hinkley (1793-1797
A very attractive 8 day longcase with early painted dial in a good quality oak case.
The solid oak case of good proportions and colour having a swan-neck pediment and long trunk door. Crossbanding in mahogany to the door and base. Featuring a satinwood cartouche to the hood, door, base, and skirting.
The painted arched dial by Ashwin & Co., a very rare dial maker only recorded as working in 1790. The style is also very unusual, the corner decoration of gilded gessowork on a solid green ground, full Arabic hour numerals and quarter minutes, with a gilt band surrounding. Steel hands of the non matching type. Makers name Donisthorpe, Hinkley signed to the lower section.
The 8 day movement of good design, rack striking (with repeatwork ) a bell on the hour.
Fully restored and guaranteed.
Standing 7 foot 3 inches tall and with a 12 inch dial.

Groves Donisthorpe of Hinkley is recorded as c. 1785, and in Loughborough 1828-35. Donisthorpe was a well known Birmingham family of clockmakers.
